The Big Drink

Sculpture by the Sea, 2009

Australia is an island surrounded by water, yet we can never be sure we’ll have enough of it. ‘The Big Drink’ highlights this irony – and brings to mind the desalination debate. The PVC and steel structure stood over 10 metres tall, held up by a 4-tonne underwater steel cage. Installation required a helicopter, a crane-equiped barge, professional scuba divers, and all of our money. A crowd favourite, it was awarded the 2009 Icebergs Artist Subsidy prize.

The steel and PVC structure stood 10.5 meters tall, weighed 400 kg, and was anchored by an underwater steel cage.
