An emerging form of graffiti was used to create these Christmas idents for MTV, subverting festive tradition. ‘LED throwies’ are coloured lights that stick to any metal surface they’re thrown at. Each throwie is made by taping together an LED bulb, a button battery, and a strong magnet. In the spirit of the season, MTV provided local youths with enough of these components to light up the city. Footage of the might became a series of TV idents. The shots were unscripted. Two handheld cameras were passed around to capture the action in a candid, documentary style.
